This is from an old cookbook that my grandparents used to love - The New Antoinette Pope School Cookbook
1 medium onion, chopped fine
1 Tbs oil or butter
1 cup catsup
1 cup water or stock
2 Tbs vinegar or 1/4 cup lemon juice
1 Tbs brown sugar
1/4 tsp dry mustard
1 1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp red pepper sauce or cayenne
1/4 tsp celery seed
1/4 tsp black pepper
Saute onion in oil or butter for about 5 minutes. Add rest of ingredients and simmer for about 15 minutes.
Makes about 2 1/2 cups
